Damien Chazelle, director who won an Oscar in 2016 for his musical La la Land, shot his latest drama in Paris Region. Our teams accompanied the French team, Atlantique Productions, in its search for locations.
At the origin of this project are four music enthusiasts: music producer Glenn Ballard, Alan Pool, producer of Six Feet Under, Damien Chazelle to whom they entrusted the direction and Jack Thorne (This Is England) to the script. This is one of the reasons why all the music is played live.
The American production Endeavor Content - wishing to give a very realistic tone to the series - relied on its French co-producer Atlantic Productions to bring the desired French touch. As executive producers, Olivier Bibas and Jimmy Desmarais called on actors Tahar Rahim and Leila Beckthi for the casting and on French directors Houda Benyamina and Laïla Marrakchi to direct several episodes. Nicolas Ploux, general manager, entrusted Stéphanie Perret and Virginie Marchesseau with the location scouting in Paris.
The association 1000 visages was also a precious help to allow the series to be multicultural, inclusive and diversified both in front of and behind the camera.
Tournage
The series was shot from May 6 to October 11, over 100 days, exclusively in Paris Region (including 63 days in Paris), in almost natural settings:
- In Bobigny, in Seine Saint Denis, a mosque was used as a set for the re-enactment of the Eid celebration.
- In Belleville and in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, towards Daumesnil, several sets were reconstructed, including the club The Eddy, a bar-tab and a restaurant - Kebab. A warehouse was also reconstituted at Studio Abel 14.
